5 Health-Related Fitness Components
The 5 Health-related components of Fitness and the Principles of Fitness are needed to live a
healthy and physically fit lifestyle. During the school year we will be
talking to the students about how they relate to the activities that we do in
PE class and other activities that they may do outside of school and in the
community. With a growing problem of obesity in the United States it is
important for our students to know that a healthy body and educated mind are
needed if we are to change our society. Following each component is the fitness test
we performed in class.
1. Cardiorespiratory Endurance (Pacer Test/Mile Run)
The ability to do moderately strenuous activity over a period of time. It reflects how well your
heart and lungs work together to supply oxygen to your body during exertion and
exercise. Also called aerobic fitness.
2. Muscular Endurance (Pushups/Curlups)
The ability to hold a particular position for a sustained period of time or repeat a movement many
times.
3. Muscular Strength (Flexed Arm Hang)
The ability to exert maximum force, such as lifting the
heaviest weight you can budge, one time.
4. Flexibility (Sit & Reach)
The ability to move a joint through its full range of motion; the elasticity of the muscle.
5. Body Composition (Height/Weight)
The proportion of fat in your body compared to your bone and muscle.
